Silicon Carbide Aggregate

The grip particle is black silicon carbide, a manufactured mineral rated 9.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. The hardness resists wearing smooth under wheels and footfall, so the rough texture stays in the floor. The particles are black and may remain visible in the finished coating, particularly in lighter colours.

Broadcast And Back-Roll

Broadcast the aggregate evenly over the final coat while it is still wet. Back-roll to distribute the particles and embed them in the surface. This method keeps the silicon carbide prominent in the cured film and gives the most pronounced anti-slip texture.

Mixed-In Dispersion

Stir the aggregate directly into the coating before application where a more evenly distributed texture is wanted. With two-pack coatings, mix the base and hardener fully before adding the grit. Use one 2.5kg pack with approximately 5kg or 5 litres of coating.

Host Coating Bond

The additive is a single-component dry aggregate with no hardener and nothing to activate. The host coating binds the particles into the floor surface as it cures. Traffic readiness therefore follows the cure of the host coating, not the additive.

Performance Profile

Single-Component Silicon Carbide Aggregate. Ultra-Grip is a dry mineral grit with no solvent, hardener or activator. It adds texture to the final coat of a floor paint or coating, and the host coating binds it to the floor. Broadcast it into the wet film or stir it in before application.

Essential Information

Product Details

Description

Ultra-Grip is a heavy-duty anti-slip additive for floor paints and floor coatings. It is a dry silicon carbide aggregate. Added to the final coat, it leaves the cured floor with a rough textured finish in place of a smooth film.

Use it in one of two ways. Broadcast it over the wet final coat and back-roll it in, so the particles stay prominent at the surface. Or stir it into the coating before application, where you want the texture spread more evenly through the film. With two-pack coatings, mix the base and hardener fully before you add the grit.

Ultra-Grip is a single component. There is no hardener and nothing to activate. It has no binder of its own and relies on the host coating to hold the particles to the floor. The finish is only as sound as the coating it goes into.

Recommended areas of use

  • The final coat of a floor paint or floor coating system
  • Coated floors where a rough textured finish is specified
  • Floors that carry forklift traffic, once the host coating has fully cured

Features

  • Silicon carbide composition: a manufactured mineral rated 9.5 on the Mohs scale, so the particles hold their edges under wheels and footfall.
  • Broadcast and back-roll method: the grit sits high in the wet film, which gives the most pronounced texture.
  • Mix-in method: the grit goes down in the same pass as the coating, with no separate broadcast step.
  • 100% solids: nothing in the additive evaporates, so it adds no solvent to the coating.
  • Single component: no hardener to measure and no pot life of its own to manage.
  • Forklift ready, so the textured finish suits forklift routes once the host coating has cured.
  • One coat: the texture goes into the final coat only, so the rest of the system is applied as normal.

Good to know

  • The silicon carbide particles may remain visible in the finished coating, particularly with lighter colours.
  • The grit is denser than the liquid coating and will settle. When mixing in, stir the treated coating regularly throughout application.
  • The finished texture depends on the host coating and the film it is applied at. Lay a test area first.
  • Traffic readiness follows the cure of the host coating, not the additive. Observe the coating's own cure times.
  • A textured floor takes more effort to clean than a smooth one. Plan the cleaning regime with that in mind.
  • No slip resistance test results are recorded for this additive. Where a project specifies a slip rating, test the finished floor.
  • Shelf life is 24 months. Keep the pack sealed and dry.
Application

BEFORE YOU START

Ultra-Grip has no binder of its own. Prepare the substrate and apply the primer and base coats as the host coating's instructions require. Add Ultra-Grip to the final coat only. Lay a test area to check the texture and the look of the grit in your chosen colour.

BROADCAST METHOD

Use this method for the most pronounced texture. Apply the final coat. Broadcast Ultra-Grip evenly across the wet film. Back-roll at once to distribute the grit and embed it in the coating. Work in sections small enough to broadcast before the coating starts to set.

MIX-IN METHOD

Use this method for a more evenly spread texture. With two-pack coatings, mix the base and hardener together fully first. Then add Ultra-Grip and stir until dispersed. Apply the final coat as normal. Stir the treated coating regularly throughout application, as the grit settles.

CURE AND TRAFFIC

The floor is ready for traffic when the host coating is cured, not before. Follow that coating's cure times for foot and forklift traffic. Keep unopened packs sealed and dry.

FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

Should I broadcast Ultra-Grip or mix it into the coating?
Broadcast it for the most pronounced texture. Apply the final coat, scatter the grit evenly over the wet film, then back-roll to embed it. This keeps the particles prominent at the surface. Mix it in where you want the texture spread more evenly through the film. With two-pack coatings, mix the base and hardener fully before adding the grit.
How much Ultra-Grip do I need?
Use 2.5kg of Ultra-Grip per 5kg or 5 litres of floor paint or coating. One 2.5kg pack therefore doses one 5-litre or 5kg unit of the final coat. Work out the volume of coating for your final coat, then order packs to match.
Will the grit show in the finished floor?
It may. The silicon carbide particles can remain visible within the finished coating, particularly with lighter colours. The floor's colour comes from the host coating. Lay a test area in your chosen colour before committing to the full floor.
Can I use it on a floor with forklift traffic?
Ultra-Grip is listed as forklift ready. The grit itself needs no cure, but it is held in place by the host coating. Do not open the floor to forklift traffic until that coating has reached the cure stated in its own instructions.
Does Ultra-Grip carry a slip resistance rating?
No slip resistance test results are recorded for this additive. It gives the coating a rough textured finish, but the result depends on the host coating, the method and the film it is applied at. Where a project specifies a slip rating, test the finished floor before handover.
